Today is the last day I’ll be writing The Prayer Blog for Purpose Driven Connection. Last year at this time I knew I would be blogging on this site beginning in January 2009 and had started to write practice posts. I never imagined I could find something to say or write about for almost a year. This is my 264th post.

Posting something five or six days a week is a daunting and wonderful discipline for me. It forces me to pay attention. Terrified friends realize that everything they say or do could appear in some future post! The gift of paying attention helps me to listen, to see, and to perceive more fully. It sharpens my ability to identify the God moments and movements in my life. I don’t need to wait for God to show up. I need to have what Episcopal Bishop Mark MacDonald of Alaska calls “Gospel eyes” –the senses to recognize God’s presence in the people, events, and minutia of my everyday life.

The downside of paying attention is the recognition of my own character defects and weaknesses. Hawk eyes make self-deception harder to pull off. This year I recognized my laziness in prayer, my failure to engage scripture in new ways, and my quick judgments of myself and others. Self-awareness is another gift of my year as a blogger. It gives me much to pray about and work on in 2010.

So with gratitude for you, the reader, and for Purpose Driven Connection, I offer this blessing from Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”  Thanks  for allowing me to share my prayer life with you in both words and doodles.

May God grant you a joyful and holy 2010.

Praying in Color for Kids or Artistically-Challenged Adults

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

My mother and grandmother were both good artists. My mother, I think, hoped I would follow suit. When I was about five, she sent a picture I had drawn to the TV show called Romper Room. When I saw my drawing of a Spanish lady dancer posted on the Romper Room bulletin board, even I knew it was pathetic.

I know how it feels to be afraid to draw. Doodling is the only visual art form I’m brave enough to attempt. So I love the irony for me of praying in color. My favorite prayer form came through my lack of ability, through my weakness. Thank you, Paul, for 2 Corinthians 12:9.

If you feel artistically-challenged or want to help a child create a prayer drawing, try tracing.  Grab an object from your kitchen drawer or cupboard and start there. The drawing below is a tracing of a votive candle holder. After that, there’s not much more than some circles, arcs, triangles, lines, and some color. As you draw, let each shape or each line be a stroke of prayer for the person you are praying for. Then use the drawing to remind you to pray.

Pen and Ink Prayer List

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

These are the people for whom I’m praying this week. My intercessions for them represent the whole gamut of human experience–celebration, tragedy, assault, surgery, dying, recovery, healing, new ministry,…. The simple pen and ink doodles remind me to pray often.

Online Advent Calendar and Active Prayer Day

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Follow this link to an online Advent calendar. Each day a new message will appear when you click on the day. Day One was yesterday, November 29. Day Two is today November 30….

On December 5, Ellen Morris Prewitt, Roy DeLeon, and I will present an Advent Retreat in Memphis. Each of us has explored ways to pray which invite the body into the prayer. We will make crosses from found and discarded objects, pray the Psalms using simple movements and gestures, and pray in color. So if you want to join us in preparing for the celebration of “the Word became flesh,” here are the details:

Thanksgiving Day

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name.” (Psalms 100:4 NRSV)

Here is my Thanksgiving Day gratitude list–a turkey full of things and friends for which and for whom I am grateful. The turkey I drew is not quite large enough to accommodate all of the people who feed and nourish me.  I sure hope the one I bought to eat is large enough to feed and nourish all those who will sit at our table today.

Happy Thanksgiving and God’s Peace.
